I fiocchi di neve immensi
Un lettore ci ha girato una foto dove vengono mostrati fiocchi di neve veramente grandi.
Vederli così grandi fa venire svariati dubbi a chi si trova davanti alla fotografia. Ma potremmo trovarci di fronte ad una NON bufala. Non è la prima volta che vengono fotografati fiocchi così grandi, la scienza ci dice che non ci sono motivazioni per cui non potrebbero crearsi, fino alle dimensioni di una moneta da un quarto di dollaro è stato provato che possono cadere. Anche se qualcuno sostiene di averli visti (ma non fotografati) grandi fino al diametro di una palla da baseball.
Il più grande mai registrato, di cui però non esistono fotografie, si dice fosse grande 38 cm, esiste addirittura un Doodle che celebra l’evento:
Anche io quando ho visto l’immagine ho dato per scontato fosse finta, ma erano troppo perfetti per fermarmi alle apparenze, dovevo andare a studiare se un evento del genere fosse possibile. Purtroppo non posso ovviamente provare l’autenticità della foto, i fiocchi dopo la foto si sono sciolti immediatamente, ma resta un evento plausibile. Specie se paragonato al racconto di fiocchi di neve da 38 cm. Ho contattato l’autrice dello scatto per avere informazioni in merito, resto in attesa di vedere se mi risponderà.
Sul New York Times spiegano:
“Who of us has seen a hailstone the size of a golf ball or a baseball?” asked Kenneth G. Libbrecht, a snowflake devotee at the California Institute of Technology who runs the physics department there in his spare time. “But, clearly, they exist, because people pull them out of their freezers. Some of these things can be very, very rare, but not impossible.”
So too with giant snowflakes, Dr. Libbrecht said. “As big as a basketball?” he asked. “Who knows? It’s not out of the question.”
The laws of physics, he said, suggest no obvious restrictions on the size of very large flakes. But in the real world, Dr. Libbrecht added, wind might break up the fragile compilations, putting an effective size limit on what flutters down from the sky.
Some of the new interest stems from weather historians who have scrutinized old reports and found recurring claims of giant snowflakes. At times, they say, independent observers of the same storm have corroborated the extraordinary falls.
